Canggu accommodation: the short answer

Canggu is a string of neighbourhoods along Bali’s south-west coast, and where you stay shapes your whole trip. Batu Bolong is the social, walkable heart. Berawa is more spread out, with beach clubs and family villas. Echo Beach is for surfers and sunsets, and Pererenan is quieter, with boutique stays and cafés.

If you want calm nights with the beaches a short ride away, look just inland at Umalas, between Canggu and Seminyak. For accommodation, Canggu offers boutique and luxury hotels, private pool villas, guesthouses and serviced residences.

Where to stay in Canggu, area by area

Batu Bolong is what most people picture when they think of Canggu: the surf break in front of Old Man’s, a main street lined with cafés, surf shops and co-working spaces, and the most walkable streets in the area. The trade-off is noise at night and heavy traffic at peak times.

Berawa is more spread out, with quieter residential streets, larger villas and the beach clubs on Berawa Beach. You will need a scooter or a car. Echo Beach is the surf-town edge of Canggu, with waves for experienced surfers and some of the best sunsets on the coast. Pererenan, a little further along, is calmer, with boutique stays, cafés and fewer crowds.

Types of accommodation in Canggu

Canggu has every kind of stay. Boutique and luxury hotels give you daily service and a restaurant on site. Private pool villas, rented by the night or the month, give a group the most space: across Bali, Bali Real Estate Consultants puts typical prices at USD 80 to 200 a night for one or two bedrooms and USD 200 to 600 for two to four bedrooms with staff.

Guesthouses are the budget option, and serviced residences sit in between: a full apartment with a kitchen, plus hotel facilities such as a pool, a gym and co-working.

Best hotels in Canggu: well-known names

Hotel Tugu Bali is one of the area’s most iconic boutique hotels, furnished in traditional Indonesian style with antiques, and home to Ji, a rooftop restaurant known for its sunset views. The Slow, on Batu Bolong, is a boutique hotel featured by Condé Nast Traveler. Regent Bali Canggu is a newer luxury resort with sweeping ocean views, and home to CURE, the beachfront restaurant of Michelin-starred chef Andrew Walsh.

These hotels are about the full resort or boutique experience. If you would rather have an apartment of your own with hotel facilities, a serviced residence is the alternative.

How to choose your Canggu base

Surf trip or solo travel: Batu Bolong or Echo Beach. Family holiday: Berawa, Pererenan or Umalas. Couples who want calm evenings: Pererenan or Umalas. Remote workers staying a month or longer: Batu Bolong for the scene, or Umalas for quiet with co-working on site.

Booking tips for Canggu

Check the exact location on a map before you book: listings often say “Canggu” for places in Berawa, Pererenan, Umalas or Kerobokan. Look at how far the property is from the main roads if you want quiet nights, and remember that sunset traffic is the slowest of the day. For stays of a week or longer, a kitchen and a gym on site make daily life much easier.
