Surf and beaches in Canggu

Batu Bolong is the classic place to learn, with friendly waves, longboarders and surf schools right on the sand. Echo Beach suits more experienced surfers and is one of the best spots on the coast to watch the sunset.

In the evening, the beach clubs of Berawa take over, with music, pools and cocktails as the sun goes down.

Markets and shopping

Love Anchor, a bazaar set in a wooden complex on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, is the place for jewellery, resort wear and artisan crafts. On Sundays, the La Brisa market at Echo Beach is worth timing your trip around.

Canggu’s surf shops and concept stores, such as Deus Ex Machina with its shop and café, are part of the scene too.

Temples and day trips

Tanah Lot, one of Bali’s most famous temples, stands on a rock in the sea a short ride north-west of Canggu. It is at its most beautiful at sunset, so arrive early to find a good spot.

For a calmer half day, Taman Ayun Temple in Mengwi, with its gardens and moats, makes an easy trip inland. At any temple, cover your shoulders and knees, and wear a sarong and sash where they are required.

Things to do in Seminyak

Seminyak is about sunsets, beach clubs and dinners out. Watch the sun go down from Seminyak Beach or Double Six Beach, or book a daybed at Potato Head Beach Club on Jalan Petitenget, designed by architect Andra Matin from thousands of reclaimed timber shutters, with daily DJ sets.

For a quieter moment, visit Petitenget Temple, a peaceful sacred site by the beach. Then walk Jalan Kayu Aya, known as Eat Street, for boutiques and restaurants, or book a spa afternoon.

Slow days in Umalas

Umalas is where you rest between big days. Walk or ride through the rice-field lanes early in the morning, before the heat arrives, and book a massage at Puella Day Spa, Luxury Bali Spa or Komang Bali Spa.

Guests of The Umalas Signature have the Infinitus rooftop gym with a sauna, ice baths and a magnesium pool, and Umalas Lounge on the roof, where a DJ plays as the sun drops over the rice fields.

Tips for your days out

Start early: mornings are cooler and the roads are quieter. Sunset is the busiest time everywhere, so leave a little earlier than you think. Ride-hailing apps make it easy to get around without a scooter, and staying in Umalas keeps both Canggu and Seminyak a short ride away.
