Bali scooter rental: prices, licence rules and safety (2026)
A scooter is the classic way to get around Bali, and police now check licences closely. What a rental costs by the day and the month, the permit you legally need, the fines, and how to ride safely in Canggu.

Bali scooter rental: the short answer
Renting a scooter in Bali is cheap: a basic automatic costs about IDR 60,000 to 100,000 a day, and a month costs about IDR 1.5 to 1.9 million. The paperwork matters more than the price. You need a motorcycle licence from home and an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, and police in Bali now check them closely.
If you have the right licence and experience, a scooter is the quickest way to get around Canggu. If you do not, ride-hailing apps and private drivers are easy alternatives.
What a scooter costs in Bali
As of July 2026, Goodbars puts a basic 110 to 125cc automatic, such as a Honda Scoopy, BeAT or Vario, at about IDR 60,000 to 100,000 a day, and a larger NMAX-class scooter at about IDR 100,000 to 200,000. Premium 250cc scooters cost more, around IDR 125,000 to 400,000 a day.
Weekly and monthly rentals bring the daily cost down. Outboundlynx reports that listings in Canggu and Ubud commonly quote IDR 1.5 to 1.9 million a month for a 110 to 125cc scooter, and about IDR 5 to 6 million for a premium 250cc model.
The licence you need to ride legally
Indonesian law requires foreign riders to carry an International Driving Permit together with their national driving licence, and the permit must cover the vehicle you are riding. For a scooter, that means the motorcycle (A) category. A car-only licence, or a permit with only the car (B) category, does not cover a scooter.
Carry the physical permit booklet, your original licence and your passport, plus the scooter’s registration papers (STNK), which the rental shop should give you. Your licence category also matters for insurance: riding without the right licence can leave you without cover after an accident.

Police checks and fines
Traffic police run regular roadside checks, especially around Canggu, Seminyak and Sunset Road, and in 2026 they routinely stop tourists. Riders who cannot show the right licence, permit and registration are fined on the spot, typically from IDR 250,000 to over IDR 1,000,000.
Riding without a helmet is fined too, at IDR 250,000 for the rider or the passenger. Helmets are mandatory for both, and a properly fastened helmet is the single most important piece of safety gear.
How to rent a scooter safely
Before you ride off, check the brakes, tyres and lights, and photograph any scratches so they are not charged to you later. Make sure you get the registration papers and a helmet that fits, and agree on the price, the deposit and what happens if the scooter breaks down.
Ride at an easy pace, especially in the rain, when roads become slippery, and on the narrow lanes of Canggu where traffic is dense. If you have never ridden a scooter, Bali is not the place to learn: start on quiet village roads, or use a driver instead.
Scooter rental in Canggu and the alternatives
Canggu is one of the busiest places in Bali for scooters, with rental shops on almost every street, and also one of the most congested. For short trips, Grab and Gojek offer both motorbike taxis and cars, which spare you the paperwork and the parking.
The Umalas Signature does not rent scooters, but guests who bring their own rental can use the secure parking in the clubhouse. For days out, the concierge can arrange a private driver on request, and Umalas is about five minutes from the Canggu beaches.
