Canggu went from a quiet surf village to one of the busiest places in Bali. What it is like today, its neighbourhoods, beaches and food, how to get around, and whether it suits your trip.

Canggu is an area of coastal neighbourhoods in North Kuta (Kuta Utara), Badung Regency, on Bali’s south-west coast, north-west of Seminyak. It is known for surf, cafés, co-working spaces, beach clubs and sunsets, and it is one of the most popular bases on the island for surfers and remote workers.

From rice fields to surf town
Within living memory, Canggu was mostly rice fields, small villages and a handful of surf breaks. Over the last decade it has grown into one of the busiest areas of Bali, with cafés, boutiques, gyms and co-working spaces between the remaining fields.
Bali as a whole keeps getting busier: in December 2025 alone, BPS Bali recorded 572,668 tourist arrivals. In Canggu that shows in the traffic, so where exactly you stay matters more than ever.
The neighbourhoods of Canggu
Batu Bolong is what most people picture when they think of Canggu: the surf break in front of Old Man’s, a main street of cafés, surf shops and co-working spaces, and the most walkable streets in the area, with noise to match at night. Berawa is more spread out, with quieter residential streets, larger villas and the beach clubs on Berawa Beach.
Echo Beach is the surf-town edge, with waves for experienced surfers and big sunsets. Pererenan is calmer, with boutique stays and cafés, and the inland lanes of Babakan and Padonan hold villas away from the main roads. Umalas, just inland between Canggu and Seminyak, is the quiet residential neighbour, about five minutes from the beaches.
Beaches and surf
Batu Bolong Beach is the classic place to learn, with friendly waves and surf schools on the sand. Echo Beach suits experienced surfers, Berawa Beach is lined with beach clubs, and Pererenan Beach is quieter. Every evening the whole coast turns towards the sunset.
Tanah Lot, one of Bali’s most famous sea temples, is a short ride north-west of Canggu and is at its best at sunset.

Food, cafés and nightlife
Canggu has one of the busiest food scenes in Bali, from smoothie-bowl cafés and long brunches to restaurants run by award-winning chefs, such as Meimei on Batu Bolong and CURE at Regent Bali Canggu. Evenings end at the beach clubs of Berawa or the bars around Batu Bolong.
Umalas, next door, adds 19 places to eat and drink around Jalan Bumbak, and Umalas Lounge, the rooftop day club of The Umalas Signature, with a pool, a bar and a DJ at golden hour.
Who Canggu suits, and who it does not
Canggu is ideal for surfers, remote workers and social travellers who want everything on their doorstep. It is less ideal if you need quiet nights or travel with small children, because the central roads are narrow, busy and loud until late.
If that sounds like you, stay on Canggu’s calmer edges, in Pererenan or Umalas, and ride into the busy parts when you want them.
Getting there and getting around
Canggu is reached by road from Ngurah Rai International Airport, and the journey time depends heavily on traffic. From Umalas, next door, the airport is around 40 minutes away. The Umalas Signature can arrange airport transfers and daily drivers on request.
Around Canggu, most people use a scooter or ride-hailing apps. Short distances can take much longer at sunset and peak hours, so it pays to stay close to what you do every day.
Where to stay in and around Canggu
Canggu offers boutique and luxury hotels, private pool villas, guesthouses and serviced residences. For calm nights close to everything, The Umalas Signature at Jalan Bumbak No. 156 in Umalas offers 1BR Suites and 2BR Residences with their own kitchens and a 5,000 m² clubhouse with a rooftop pool and bar, the Infinitus gym and co-working, by the night or the month.
