Canggu beaches: the short answer

Canggu’s coastline is one long stretch of black volcanic sand. Walk west from Berawa and you cross Nelayan, Batu Bolong Beach, Batu Mejan and Echo Beach before reaching Pererenan, often without noticing where one beach ends and the next begins.

The best Canggu beach depends on what you want. Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu is the place to learn to surf and the liveliest at sunset. Berawa is the beach club strip. Echo Beach and Pererenan draw stronger surfers, and the further west you go, the quieter and more local the coast becomes.

Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu: surf schools and sunsets

Batu Bolong Beach, at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, is the most famous and the busiest beach in Canggu. The wave is a mellow semi-reef break with a whitewater section where beginners catch their first waves, and surf schools and board rentals line the sand. Surf guides at Kima Surf note that it works at all tides and is best from mid to high tide.

In the evening, Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu turns into its own small nightlife district, with Old Man’s and the bars behind the beach filling up at sunset. Expect crowds in the water and on the sand. Parking costs around IDR 5,000.

Berawa Beach and Nelayan Beach

Berawa Beach is where Canggu feels most polished. FINNS and Atlas beach clubs dominate this stretch, and the crowd mixes families, groups and party-goers. The beach is wide and open, which makes it one of the best Canggu beaches for a sunset walk or a drink with a view.

Nelayan Beach sits between Berawa and Batu Bolong, at the end of Jalan Nelayan. It is the calm middle of the coast, with a handful of beach bars, simple warungs and locals fishing in the late afternoon. The surf can be messy here, so it is better for morning walks and a quiet sunset than for lessons.

Echo Beach and Batu Mejan

Echo Beach, at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan, is the best-known surf spot in Canggu for experienced surfers. Its powerful left-hand wave breaks over a shallow reef, the line-up is competitive, and Kima Surf warns of exposed, sharp reef at low tide. It is a beach for watching good surfers and the sunset rather than for a first lesson.

Batu Mejan, right next to Echo Beach, is home to La Brisa, a beach club built from the timber of old fishing boats, and its Sunday market. The two beaches blend into each other, and this stretch is one of the most photogenic corners of the coast at sunset, without becoming a party zone.

Pererenan Beach and the quiet west

Pererenan Beach belongs to the village of Pererenan, just west of Canggu, though most visitors treat it as part of the same coast. It is wide and scenic, with a few relaxed warungs and beach bars. The surf here is for intermediate and advanced surfers, with a right and a left breaking over reef and sand and a current from the river mouth.

Beyond Pererenan, the beaches of Munggu, Seseh and Cemagi feel local and open, with fishermen, solo surfers and very few venues. To the south, Batu Belig sits between Canggu and Seminyak and is known for Sunday sunsets at 707 Beach Berm and for Mari Beach Club.

Can you swim at Canggu beaches?

You can, but it is often not ideal. The waves are strong, the currents are unpredictable and none of the Canggu beaches is naturally calm, so most people surf, wade or cool off at the shoreline. Follow any flags and warnings on the beach, and if you are not a confident swimmer, stay in the shallows.

All Canggu beaches have black sand. For soft white sand and calmer water for swimming, head to Nusa Dua or the Bukit Peninsula. Many visitors combine both: sunsets and surf in Canggu, and a pool day close to where they stay.

Where to stay near the Canggu beaches

Staying right behind Batu Bolong or Berawa puts you close to the sand, and close to the noise and traffic. Umalas, a short ride inland, keeps the beaches about five minutes away while your evenings stay quiet among the rice fields.

The Umalas Signature at Jalan Bumbak No. 156 has a 1BR Suite for couples and a 2BR Residence for families, booked by the night or by the month. After the beach there is a rooftop pool with 360° views at Umalas Lounge and the Infinitus gym in the clubhouse, and the concierge can arrange a driver for the beach run on request.
